UK Online Scam: How to Report Fraud, Phishing and Online Payment Scams
If you are in the UK and have been targeted by an online scam, act promptly. Contact the organisation involved in the payment, protect your accounts, preserve evidence and use the correct reporting channel.
This is general legal-awareness information, not UK legal representation. Procedures can differ, including between England and Wales and Scotland.

1. Contact Your Bank or Payment Provider
If you sent money or disclosed financial information, contact your bank, card issuer or payment provider immediately. Ask what fraud, dispute, recall or security measures are available.
2. Use the UK Reporting Route
For England and Wales, the current government guidance directs victims of online fraud to Report Fraud. See the official GOV.UK guidance on reporting scams and phishing.
If you are in Scotland and have lost money because of an online scam or fraud, the same GOV.UK guidance directs you to report the crime to Police Scotland.
3. Preserve Evidence
- Emails and message threads
- Sender addresses and phone numbers
- Website URLs and screenshots
- Payment records and transaction references
- Invoices, fake notices or advertisements
- Social-media profile information
- A date-and-time incident timeline
4. Watch for Government and Service Impersonation
Some scams imitate government services or use websites, emails and phone numbers that look official. GOV.UK advises people to use GOV.UK to find official government services and phone numbers rather than relying on suspicious links or contacts.
5. Secure Your Accounts
Change passwords if they may have been exposed, avoid reusing passwords and enable multi-factor authentication where available. Review financial accounts for unfamiliar transactions or changes.
6. Do Not Pay a “Recovery” Agent Automatically
Previous scam victims can be targeted again by people promising to recover money. Be cautious about demands for upfront fees, cryptocurrency, remote access or sensitive banking information.
When UK Legal Advice May Be Appropriate
Consider advice from an appropriately authorised UK legal professional where the matter involves significant losses, contractual disputes, business consequences, identity issues, threatened proceedings or complicated cross-border facts.
